Looking for 2018 used truck and trailer news? You’ve come to the right place. Want to increase your fleet? Think pre-owned semis and tractors.

A recent Freight Waves article shared highlights from J.D. Power’s Valuation Services used truck report and FTR’s (Freight Transportation Research) preliminary trailer order report. The bottom line regarding truck and trailer sales? A high demand for used trucks and trailers continues to absorb the available used truck supply.

When trucks become available on the market, they typically go to an auction. Currently, used truck volume continues to be lower than expected due to a high demand for them. This means industry fleets are keeping existing equipment and buying additional used trucks and trailers, too.

J.D. Power Senior Analyst Chris Visser expected a historically patterned rise in used truck volume…but that’s not happening. “We should be seeing a lot more trade-ins than we’re seeing,” Visser said. Why the lower-than-predicted used truck sale volume? Visser attributes the lack of trade-ins to a couple of factors; economic improvement and the ELD mandate. These two statistics might be causing fleets to hold on longer to current equipment.

Truck And Trailer Activity

The JD Power report goes on to reveal a slight shortage of newer used trucks under 400,000 miles. All in all, the report’s findings bring to light interesting data about the used truck market.

FTR shared their preliminary May 2018 trailer order numbers findings. This number, approximately 21,200, aligns with the traditional seasonal order drop. However, that number still represents a strong May sales number. Just three years ago in 2015, May trailer sales were 30% lower than this year’s sales numbers. The economy and ELD are affecting truck and trailer sales. What about the trucker shortage?

The transportation industry is now actively recruiting millennials. Millennials seek a career giving them an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the world. What better way to make a difference than to be a part of supply chain? Trucking delivers medical supplies, food, clothing, water, and other goods to those who need these things. Whatever factors drive transportation and a high used truck demand, doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that we keep the people supplied with the things they want!
