Did you know that cargo vehicle trailer sales seasonally change? Did you also know they currently show strong shipping needs? Check it out here.

Freight Waves recently shared stats released by America’s Commercial Transportation (ACT) Research, Co., LLC and FTR Transportation Intelligence about cargo vehicle trailer sales. Though April saw its usual sales dip, that decline still indicates a 10% year-over-year increase with a 21% higher up spike than seen in April 2015.

Don Ake, FTR vice president of commercial vehicles, revealed that most fleets have already submitted their 2018 orders. Submitting an order is an important first step to get in line for a trailer to be manufactured. Also, some dry van OEMs are already booked solid.

April orders represent a strong month for trailers. But there are backlogs. Those will start to diminish. But patience is needed by fleets. So, what’s holding things up?

At issue is an increase in component shortages. These shortages may prevent new cargo vehicle trailer order production from being completed in 2018. On a brighter side, Mr. Ake suggested that refrigerated van and vocational trailer orders could be satisfied for 2018. Lastly, considering the chugging economy, he believes the market will generally see a sales increase of all trailer types.

ACT, the recognized North American leading publisher of commercial vehicle (CV) industry data, market analysis and forecasting services reports similar findings to FTR’s stats. Though current industry statistics show a dip in cargo vehicle trailer orders, that dip is actually an increase compared with past years.

With strong orders for new trailers, more backlogs increase. Luckily, component suppliers are starting to fill the backlog of needed parts. Though it’s good news component suppliers are filling the needed parts backlog, delivery delays may still be an issue for those currently ordering trailers.

What do all these statistics mean for companies wanting to order new trailers? Depending on the trailer category a fleet wants to order, that company may experience a delivery date well into 2019.
