ELD DOT Hours Of Service

Now that truck drivers are required to comply with ELD laws, is it negatively affecting a truck driver’s income earnings?

The specific hours a truck driver may spend driving a truck is strictly ruled by the DOT. The Department of Transportation (DOT) continues to enforce the new ELD (Electronic Logging Device) requirement mandated for all commercial truck drivers. Now that truck drivers are required to comply with ELD laws, is it negatively affectinga truck driver’s income earnings? What about making the roads safer as the ELD is touted to eventually do? To be sure, the DOT Hours of Service change is challenging the trucking industry.

Because many truckers are driving less hours, delivering goods on-time is becoming harder. Shipping costs are expected to rise. Additionally, delivery dates may have to be extended due to being unable to find qualified people to drive trucks. There are still a lot of unanswered questions as to the value of ELD.

Road Safety – Is the ELD DOT Hours Of Service Change Working?

Truckers are going through a cultural shock complying with the ELD rule. But is compliance making the roads safer with better rested truck drivers? We don’t know yet. Mainly, the debates heard have been truckers talking about getting different work to make ends meet. Or, simply changing careers.

Truckers have expressed their frustrations about feeling unappreciated for the tireless job they do to get goods to local stores. Complaints that with ELD there are no longer opportunities to falsify logs and get away with keeping two sets of books have also been heard.

Truck drivers are talking about the need to improve route planning and reduce unloading wait time at shipper customer locations. But how can that be achieved?

As truck drivers continue to feel upset about ELD compliance and how it’s affecting their bottom income earning line, motor carriers will probably be pressured to increase driver pay so drivers will keep driving. So, what’s happening for you as a truck driver with all these changes? What can be done to help the trucking industry. No one knows yet. There are still a lot of unknowns.
