Driverless trucks will slowly but surely appear on our roadways. What are cybersecurity concerns for these trucks? Good question!

In January 2018, The University of Michigan published an article about driverless vehicle cybersecurity. The revelations can be applied to any driverless trucks as well as personally owned and operated vehicles. More on the security concerns in a minute.

We know that virtually any computer system can be hacked. Think about how cybersecurity might be a concern in the following 3 hypothetical driverless trucks scenarios:

1. Instead of delivering goods to an end destination, a company’s driverless truck delivers materials to an unscheduled location and disables all GPS capabilities. Unable to trace where the truck stopped, the pirates freely get away with the retail goods aboard.

2. A customer callsa trucking company to pick up a load. The company sends a driverless truck to pick the load up. On the trip over, the connected truck takes a detour. The supply chain company gets a text message: Send $500 in Bitcoin to this account and your truck will then be sent to your customer.

3. The supply chain company sends a driverless truck with a partial load on it to a customer. En route to the customer’s location, the supply chain company gets a text message: Deposit $1000 to this account to insure the partial load on the truck will stay secure while going to this new customer.

Are Driverless Trucks Actually Going To Benefit Supply Chain?

Before driverless trucks can be a viable solution for moving retail goods, connected truck vulnerabilities need to be analyzed to preventany weaknesses from being exploited. After all, cybersecurity really is all about piracy.

Effective cybersecurity, a type of loss prevention technology, is an important step for any supply chain company using computers. Right now, cybersecurity is a must for all supply chain companies regardless of whether they use driverless trucks or not.
